Daniel Alcock unfortunately had to pull out suffering a touch of dehydration after dropping off the lead bunch after 130 kilometres. There were around 70 starters in A grade but only 15 at the top of the climb, Dan being one of them. A small gap opened up which Dan was unable to close, with the race riding away from him Dan decided to return to his 4 kids and wife.
In division 2 Nathan Chiswell came 10th and Erin Rogers pulled out after becoming sick. Nathan was also with the lead bunch at the top of the climb however a few riders got away after the summit. The bunch was not willing to work therefore they concided over 5 minutes to the 3 riders in front. Nathan stated that he will work on his sprint skills so he can hold a better position next year.
It was Nathan’s first attempt at the event, well done.Matt Hoy and Matt Vagg came 17th and 18threspectively in division 3. They were with the main bunch after a few riders got away up the climb. Matt Vagg rode a very smart race by staying with the main bunch at all times to make sure he got to the finish line. Matt Hoy also rode very well as he stayed with the main bunch up the climb until the tempo was too much. He settled into to his own pace and grabbing wheels as stronger riders past him. Once he crested the summit he got into a working bunch and was able to integrate back into the division 3 main bunch. Again it was their first attempt at the race, it was great result as there were 60 finishers.
In the Under 19 Chris Janz dropped off the winning bunch with about 20 kilometres to go, he finished the event in 8th. Given there were Australian Champions in his race and teams he had a fantastic race. In his own words if you put it into perspective he was very happy. Chris has only started cycling this year so the future looks good for him.
Vanessa McDonald finished 8th in the women’s event. Vanessa rode with the leading bunch for the 95 kilometres, closing gaps and climbing well. In the sprint for the line she was baulked by other riders touching wheels. Vanessa was very happy as she showed that she can race with the best riders in the country. She is very determined to go even better next year.
The riders would like to give a big thankyou for their family and friends for their support in the lead up to the race and on race day, without them the riders could not achieve the results that they did. The Coffs Harbour Mountain Marathon was also on last weekend however results where not available, look for a race report in next week’s paper.
