The night saw a flurry of riders from the little tackers right through to the seniors. Three littlies saw the tiny tots grade kick off again with Tahlia, Beau and Xavier battling it out in a one lap dash, training wheels and all! For any families whether they be track racers or not this grade is always open for scooters, plastic trikes etc for the little ones so bring them along and encourage friends and family to as well and make it a family night out!

However the best ducking and weaving was done by little Will Sillence who unfortunately came unstuck in a nasty slow speed crash resulting in him taking a ride in the Ambulance with a fractured lower arm. Best wishes to you muscles. We hope you have a speedy recovery and you’re back on the bike in no time!

This weekend saw the annual Coffs Harbour Track Camp at Toormina step up a level with the significant presence of National Track coach Sean Eadie and Armidale Cycles track guru Mark Bullen in attendance.

The track camp is aimed at giving riders access to international level coaches and their knowledge, covering a broad range of topics from positioning on a bike to positioning for a win. The best coaches, a great venue, perfect weather, a hand full of red hot tips, and some noticeable improvements ensured this year’s camp was an outstanding success for the riders as well as for our club. I just cannot thank enough those people who made it possible, and those that came along and participated. 

Thanks again to all those who helped on the night, Sue Cameron, Geoff Hardaker & Craig Camo once more on the moto.

Special mentions:

1. Di Lupinski who got right behind Dave Leckers at the start of the Keirin final.
   
2. Thumping Matt Sillence, the only one who is actually built like a track rider, torturing his track bike down the back straight in an attempt to take a 500m flyer in the first keirin heat. I’m tipping that when Matt starts to explore bigger gears, he will leave a few behind.
   
3. Harrison Alcock for asking permission to attack the motorbike at the start of the junior motor paced event. Very good manners Harrison, thank you. An aggressive Alcock. On a track bike. Could be one to watch.

   Heat 1: 1st Dave Leckers, 2nd Joel, despite having to ride outside the paceline for much of the race, 3rd Steve, 4th Matt Sillence just hanging on after his flying 500m on a junior gear.

Don’t forget the track camp is on this weekend with special guest Sean Eadie, NSW track coach, and a man who knows how to make facial hair look scary. With that, track racing moves back to its regular Saturday night timeslot and crits make a return this Monday with daylight savings. I hope you have your speed legs ready, it’s going to be a fast summer at Toormy.

Twenty riders took to the track with one junior grade and three senior grades keeping things interesting. The last two years have seen the maturity of several junior riders who now form the basis of the Split Espresso Junior Development squad. I’m willing to bet that the Split riders and a Racing Kangaroo will take the majority of the senior wins this season.

No racing on Saturday the 17th as the 18th of March is the Armidale crit, a great event anyone who likes racing should not miss. Crits don’t get better than Armidale.

Tuesday night training continues all year, juniors from 4.30pm and seniors from 5.30pm. ALL YEAR. Qualified coaches are at the track on Tuesday night to sort you out. Don’t have a track bike? No worries, the club has a couple of spare bikes that you can use. And finally, all the best to Team Lupinski who are making the overland trek to Dubbo next weekend for Anton to teach the locals a few lessons at the State Junior Track Championships. Go Anton.

Congratulations to the Italian Pursuit team of Zoe McDonald, Alyssa Saward, Shaun Cameron, Garry Cameron, Friedy Meinel, Richard Berends and Nathan Hardaker who for the first time in at least five years at the track caught and passed the opposition team to end the race three laps early.
